Gas prices this year will drive a lot of us - no, not to drink! - to research how we can make things more affordable, either the car or the gas, so we can decrease our busting gas budget and bring it back to normal. Hybrid cars have found their greatest hour of fame because of the 2008 gas prices and the increase cost in just filling up your gas tank for the week. Driving down the freeway today, folks no longer stare as the hybrid that goes by - there are lots of them. Eight years ago a friend bought a Honda Insight, when it was the thing. Hybrid cars were not well known at the time and friends and strangers stopped to pick his brains as he filled up. Now most of the big manufacturers have put out a hybrid car or two. Usually there is a coupe, very pared down with two seats, and another model, family style. Hybrids are not known for having a lot of room inside, so they are most popular for city driving, where you can un-cramp fast. It’s a pity, because where they really shine is on the long stretches.

Recent reports on these cars shows that they do save on gas. Mileages range from 24 mpg on the larger models to - believe it or not! - 64 miles. This larger number is for standard transmissions rather than automatic. But for savings like that, heck, who minds shifting?? Think of it - you could drive from San Francisco to Sacramento on a gallon. At today’s predicted top prices, that would come to about $3.60! One caveat, though, almost all of the hybrids get incredibly better mileage in the country, where they speed along with no complicated stops. Hybrid cars cost more, often a lot more, but good old Uncle Sam will pay in the neighborhood of $1500 if we are good citizens and purchase a hybrid car, so the sticker price is not that much of a shock.

Good mileage like that mentioned doesn’t come without a price, however. Hybrid cars run on very little fossil fuel, partly because as they go down the road, the huge batteries that are under the hood (or in the trunk) are charging. You don’t have to plug them in, and the charge they get as you drive is free. Big problem, though is the day the batteries need to be replaced. That’s right, batteries don’t go on forever, no matter what the Energizer Bunny tells you. Replacement is expensive. Does the cost eat up most of the savings you made at the gas pump? It’s hard to get a concrete answer to this. A lot depends on the quality of the battery that is originally in your new hybrid car, but it pays to ask that question when you go to the dealer showroom

Consumer Reports Cited Fuel Efficient SUVs

With the prices of gas and fuel increasing steadily, consumers tend to turn their backs on the sport utility vehicle (SUV) market. Sports utility vehicles after all has a reputation for being gas guzzlers and that is why most consumers now opt for more fuel efficient smaller cars like a sedan or a coupe.

But the versatility and the loading capacity of an SUV is hard to match, even by large sedans. That is why Consumer Reports came out with a list of the most fuel efficient SUVs to help consumers choose the right kind of vehicle that would suit their needs and wants as well as their budgets. The list of the best and worst SUVs when it comes to fuel economy is the result of a battery of tests that were performed by Consumer Reports on the SUVs that are currently available in the market.

“With more crossovers, hybrids, and car-based SUVs entering the market, it’s now much easier to find an SUV that gets gas mileage similar to a midsized sedan,” Rik Paul, the Automotive Editor for Consumer Reports, quipped. The editor also pointed out that consumers can save a lot of money that is usually spent on fuel simply by doing research before choosing a car to buy. And the magazine has provided prospective car buyers with a comprehensive list of the best and the worst fuel efficient SUVs in the market so as to aid them in choosing a vehicle.

Aside from giving their readers an idea which vehicles are noteworthy, they also showed them which vehicles to avoid where fuel economy is concerned. The information presented by Consumer Reports is a great help to prospective car buyers. What can be more helpful though are the pieces of information about choosing after market parts for the vehicle like EBC brake rotors or other car parts.

Some of the sport utility vehicles tested by Consumer Reports posted gas mileage which is similar to that of a conventional family sedan. Models like the Ford Escape Hybrid, the Saturn Vue Green Line, and the Toyota RAV-4 model that uses a 4-cylinder engine each posted 23-26 miles per gallon, and that is not far from gas mileage ratings achieved by some sedans. While there are SUVs that boasts of good fuel economy, there are also those that would burn a hole in your pocket with gas mileage ratings that seem to use up each gallon of fuel faster than you can say jag. Small SUVs which have performed poorly on the fuel economy tests are the Kia Sorento LX, the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara, and the Jeep Liberty Sport.

The tests conducted by Consumer Reports gave a result of an equally weighted average of city, highway, and one-day trip gas mileage ratings. For the city driving gas mileage rating, Consumer Reports simulated stop-and-go driving with a total of 18 stops, four minutes of idling, and speeds reaching up to 40 miles per hour. For the highway mpg rating, testers drove the vehicles through eight 5-mile laps with a constant speed of 65 miles per hour.

To find out the gas mileage rating of the vehicles for a one-day trip, testers pushed the vehicles through 155 miles in a day. The trip is constituted by 26 percent freeway driving, 11 percent two-lane highway, and 63 percent varied countryside roads with turns and minute elevation differences. The tests conducted show the overall performance of the vehicles in terms of fuel economy, other components of the vehicles were not tested.

Other noteworthy SUVs in the midsize segment are the Lexus RX400h, with a gas mileage rating of 23 miles per gallon, and the Toyota Highlander Hybrid Limited which posted 22 miles per gallon. The BMW X3 3.0si, the Nissan Murano, and the Toyota Highlander Limited also posted good gas mileage ratings of 19 miles per gallon. Consumer Reports however did not find any vehicle in the large SUV segment with unusually good gas mileage figures.

Global warming is a major issue in the United States today, and lately, it seems it’s been in the news more than ever. In 2008, a pivotal election year, every major or minor candidate running for office would be remiss not to address issues of fuel conservation, carbon emissions reduction, and alternative energy sources. New and used cars and trucks alike burn gasoline to enable motion, and gasoline burning is a major source of carbon dioxide emissions in the United States. Over time, the cumulative effects of global warming can include significant increases in Earth temperatures; the melting of polar ice caps, and severe weather incidents resulting in property destruction and losses of human life. One easy way to reduce CO2 emissions is to reduce the amount of fuel burned per day, per month, and per year.

Americans who live in major cities — such as New York, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Baltimore, or Atlanta — often have the option of helping to reduce total yearly carbon emissions by taking public transportation. The American Public Transportation Association estimates that using public transportation saves $1.4 billion worth of gasoline each year. However, many Americans do not live in areas where subways, buses, or trolleys are available or convenient. Some American suburbs are too sparsely populated to support extensive public transportation; meanwhile, the infrastructures of many exurban areas cannot support bus or light rail systems at all. In order to effectively reduce American CO2 emissions each year, individual drivers must seek solutions to excessive personal vehicle gasoline consumption, including car, truck, and SUV gasoline use.

In March 2004, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the manufacture of the first “advanced hydraulic hybrid” SUV. NextEnergy, a Michigan nonprofit organization states that hydraulic hybrid cars, trucks, and SUVs use a regenerative braking system. This means that when the hybrid driver brakes his or her car, truck, or SUV to a stop, the vehicle motor pumps fluid from a low-pressure chamber to a high-pressure chamber. The fluid that is pumped is hydraulic, and has the ability to pressurize the braking system by compressing nitrogen gas in the high-pressure chamber. As the system is pressurized, energy is stored by a system battery, to be used during vehicle acceleration or in other driving modes.

Hybrid cars, trucks, and SUVs are seen as Earth-friendly inventions. By capturing kinetic energy that would otherwise be lost during the vehicle braking process, and using this energy to charge the vehicle battery, hybrid vehicles reduce the total amount of gasoline the car, truck, or SUV must burn to generate motion. Therefore, this type of technology results in significant fuel savings for the consumer. In many hybrid vehicle models, the gasoline-driven engine completely shuts down during stops, resulting in heightened vehicle fuel economy.

Global warming is much more complex than just carbon dioxide emissions, however. Several chemical compounds created by fuel production and use contribute to the “greenhouse effect,” or the warming of Earth surface temperatures that results from gases trapping heat in the atmosphere. The fact that burning gasoline releases CO2 into the atmosphere is fairly well known. However, several other principle gas compounds contribute to the greenhouse effect, too.

Gasoline combustion, in addition to releasing CO2, releases nitrous oxide, NO2, into the atmosphere. According to the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change, NO2 has 296 times the impact of CO2 per unit of mass over longer periods of time. Therefore this compound, though less often discussed than CO2, is another deleterious chemical by-product of fuel consumption. Furthermore, the production of fuel itself contributes harmful compounds to the atmosphere. Methane gas, CH4, is released during fuel production activities. The IPCC estimates that methane has a dire effect on global warming, as well - it warms the Earth 25 times as much as CO2 per unit mass over long periods of time. Automobile manufacturers and drivers alike can readily conclude then that production and consumption of fuel has major, long-term consequences for life on Earth.

During the driving process, a significant opportunity for fuel waste occurs when a car, truck, or SUV is stopped with the motor still running; for example, at a stoplight or an intersection. A hybrid engine reduces incidents of gasoline waste and total chemical atmospheric release because it draws from stored energy to power the motor when the vehicle is idling or traveling at the lowest speeds. The smaller, more fuel-efficient hybrid engines also enable them to reduce greenhouse emissions by using less gasoline overall. Consumer pocketbooks benefit immensely from reduced gasoline consumption, of course. More importantly, experts from institutions like the Environmental Protection Agency and the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change estimate that hybrid vehicles will lessen or halt the effects of greenhouse gases on the Earth.

Ford Escape Hybrid Car

Consider one simple fact: The Ford Escape Hybrid is the most efficient hybrid SUV on the market. The front-drive Escape Hybrid has government fuel economy ratings of 34 city/31 highway, while the AWD version offers 29 city/27 highway. What else do you need to know, except that the Ford Escape Hybrid offers plenty of space, comfort, and versatility?

For 2009, the Ford Escape Hybrid replaces a 2.3-liter engine with a 2.5—boosting net horsepower from 155 to 177. Ford engineers refined the Escape hybrid’s braking system to allows for better traction and stability control, and a smoother feel to the brakes, previously not incorporated into the hybrid system. Noise and vibrations have been reduced in the process. This is especially evident when the engine shuts off and the vehicle moves into all-electric mode.

Another really nice feature for 2009: A 110-volt AC power outlet now comes standard in the Escape Hybrid.

These upgrades go a long way toward making up any shortcomings in the previous Escape Hybrid. Still, the Ford Escape Hybrid’s extra 300 pounds of weight as compared to the regular gas-powered Escape, gives it a feeling of heaviness. In addition, the Ford Escape Hybrid may not be the ideal choice if battling harsh weather and road conditions are your top priority. Other hybrid SUVs on the market are better suited for off-road travel and towing, although the Ford Escape Hybrid’s ride quality is more than adequate for both commuting and carting the family.

These pet peeves aside, the Ford Escape Hybrid is a capable, versatile, and efficient vehicle—perhaps the most realized expression so far of the combined benefits and capabilities of an SUV, and the fuel parsimony of a hybrid.
